It’s early morning and the rest of the castle is still sleeping. A few stray people are starting to stumble through hair and makeup, nursing steaming mugs of coffee, but for the most part, the castle is for once quiet. I sit over a pot of tea with Rick, and eventually catch up with him.
Is this your first experience with Top Recruiter?
It is yes.
How have you found it so far?
It’s been better than I expected.
What were your expectations
Didn’t have any, so it’s always better.
Ha, great ethos. What have you enjoyed so far?
I’ve met so many great people, they’re all such good fun. All very smart with different angles and ideas.
Tell me a bit about your role on the show?
Well that just changed last night.
I got thrown in the deep end. I’m now with Bruce supporting the European candidate in the presentation and the final show. Which I didn’t quite expect. But it’s good to be there, and I think we’re going to do well, she’s a very smart girl.
What have you thought of the American candidates?
I haven’t had as much time with them as I would like, but all very smart and intelligent and great at what they do.
Do you think the European candidate has a chance against America?
I do. She’s trying to do something that is quite left field, so I think if we structure it right, she’s got a great chance.
Out of everyone here, who have you met, that you didn’t know previously, that you’ve really enjoyed getting to know.
God, I don’t think I’ve met anyone I haven’t gotten along with. But I had a great night out with Darren Ryemill and Tom Glanfield, and really got to know them. Hannah Peet, Randy Moore, Keith Potts. Honestly, everyone’s been great. That’s the good thing. They’re all like-minded with similar goals and successful at what they do.
Why did you decide to do this?
Well my business is growing internationally. We’ve just opened in London.
Tell me a bit about your business.
JXT is a technology business and we’ve got a recruitment marketing platform. We make recruiters look great online. We protect recruiters brand, and we optimise marketing for recruiters. We essentially take their brand, and optimise it from every digital angle.
How did you get into that?
We started life as a job board, and in 2008 when the recession hit, our investors wouldn’t invest anymore. But we had this great piece of technology, so we started talking to our clients and they unanimously said they wanted to invest in their own brand. So we turned the whole model around and work with over 800 recruitment companies.
How many years have you been in recruitment?
Ten years now.
What do you think Top Recruiter is doing for the industry?
I think we’re on a journey. What I would like to see out of it is to really make the recruitment industry more professional and provide value to business, and play an important part in the war for talent. I would like to see it elevate the perception of the industry.
What do you think is the biggest issue in recruitment right now?
I think the industry does have an issue around consistency. We can see that in our own client base. Some are passionate and go all in, and some just fly by the seat of their pants and throw around CVs.
What do you think you’ll take away from this experience?
New connections. Quite a few new ideas. And potential partnerships.
Would you do it again?
What’s been your favourite moment so far?
There’s been many so that’s a tough one. But a hilarious one was when we did the first shoot and the glass fell on the cameraman’s head.
What are you looking forward to?
Helping finalise the pitch and get it ready for James and Karen.
By this time, the castle is in full motion, and cast and crew members are coming out to eat breakfast in the sun. It may be not even 9am, but the jokes start flying, someone grabs more coffee, another person joins the table, and so the day starts.
